Watch this Space - Practical Tips for an Energetically Healthy Home

Do you have a favourite room in your house? Can you think of someone whose house you generally don't like going to? Have you ever walked into a room, house or space and noticed how it just feels... different?

Our spaces hold the energy of what has come before - whether it is joy, love, anxiety, fear, anger or sorrow. The energy of our conversations, thoughts, and activities can hang around within our spaces, and where this may not have been a positive imprint, the accumulation can sometimes cause a room to feel stagnant, heavy, or unwelcoming.

When my son was a baby, he was fascinated by the upper corners of the rooms in our house. He would watch them with awe, as if he could see what was swirling and gathering within those spaces. As we get older and become more identified with the noisy, fast-paced demands of the external world, we can lose sense of the subtlety by which energy collects within a space. But if we really listen in closely to our experiencing, we know when we feel at ease within a space, and we also know when something feels off.

Often we can feel like we want to refresh our spaces but we're not sure where to start. We can buy air fresheners, fragrance oils and diffuser sticks, but these often contain chemicals which are not necessarily the best things we can introduce to our environment. Here are some practical, more nature-embracing ideas to get you started:

  • Regular Ventilation

Often our modern homes are so well insulated that they can inhibit and stifle the flow of fresh air, which can cause the energy in a room to become blocked and stagnant. This can be difficult to address when considerations around keeping our belongings safe and saving money on heating costs can also discourage us from ventilating our homes. If possible and safe to do so, try leaving a window open for a period of time to allow air to move, and keep internal doors open where possible.

  • Air-Purifying Houseplants

Well-looked after plants are a wonderful companion to a space. Not only do they convert the carbon dioxide we exhale into oxygen for us to breathe in, in reciprocal relationship to us, but some specific plants can also help to remove impurities in the air for us and keep the space nice and fresh. Good air-purifiers are peace lilies, spider plants and ferns. Ensure they are kept away from draughts and direct sunlight, and are watered when needed, and they will be happy to help!

  • Himalayan Salt Lamps

These beauties work wonders to keep the energy in a space clear and lift the vibrations of a room. When you use a salt lamp in a room on a regular basis, you will begin to feel drawn to being in that room, and if you keep a salt lamp nearby to a houseplant, you will notice the plant thriving in no time! My favourites are the pink salt ones, but a grey one works just as well. Electricity costs and safety considered, try to keep them on for as long as you can while you are in the house to experience the best results.

  • Mindful Use of Sound

The sounds that we introduce to a space - whether from our devices, home appliances, the music we play, conversations we have (and the tone we use), or external noise such as road traffic, lawnmowers or noise from other households - can have more of an effect on our spaces than we realise. When we stop to listen, we find our homes can be noisy places! The vibrations in the sound waves caused by these sounds can affect the energy within our homes. There are a number of ways we can use sound to lift the energy in our homes:

  1. Treat your home to some silence – switch off your devices, take a break from the laundry, close your windows for a while... and enjoy a rest for your ears too!

  2. Be mindful what you listen to – it always good to check in with how your body feels when you listen to music or other media. If your body feels good, you know this will lift the energy in your home too!

  3. Play Solfeggio Frequencies – you can find these online, I love Meditative Mind (which can be found on YouTube and Spotify, or at https://meditativemind.org) although others are available. The different vibrations of solfeggio frequencies have specific properties. For instance, music set at 741hz is a good one for removing toxins in the environment, or try 417hz for dispelling negative energy.

  • Quartz Crystals

Quartz crystals are really effective energy cleansers, not just for our own energetic bodies, but for the energy within a room too. Placing clear quartz crystals in the corners of a room will help to clear and cleanse the energy within a space, or have a play around with other quartz crystals, such as citrine or rose quartz, to discover other properties and subtle effects. Your quartz crystals will absorb the energy of the room, so make sure you look after your quartz by regularly bathing them in a fresh bowl of salted water, and then put them in either the sunlight or moonlight to keep them happy and healthy.

  • Aromatherapy

Burning and diffusing essential oils can bring a whole host of different benefits to a space depending on the oils you use. Good clearing oils include lavender, sage, lemon, grapefruit, rosemary, eucalyptus and bergamot. Make sure you invest in a good oil burner and that your oils are therapeutic grade. Oil vaporisers can be a good investment, but I personally find the vibrations used can offset the beneficial energy if you are sensitive to this, so try before you buy or get a good recommendation to find one suitable for you.

  • Surround Yourself with Beauty and Purpose

The furniture, objects and décor in our homes should fill us with joy and gratitude. If we feel surrounded by items which we feel indifferent towards or which we have no practical use for, we can disengage with our spaces and the energy within will mirror this. It is important to bear this is mind when selecting items for our home, by choosing mindfully and intentionally, and in alignment with our hearts. Donating or upcycling the items we no longer connect with can also bring relief and uplift the energy within the space.
